The Harvey and Marion Grissom Enrichment and Development Corporation ( HMGEDC)
began in the mind of Dr. Harvey M. Grissom in 1993. As the pastor
of the First Glory Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Grissom's spiritual concern
for the parishioners followed a natural metamorphosis. It was
his desire to promote literacy and academic advancement within
the church and it's surrounding community. The initial step was
to implement an academic tutoring program. This took place in
1995 beginning with tutoring, computer literacy and the "Succeeding
In Reading" program. These programs were designed to enhance
self concept by mastering new skills and identifying individual
learning styles. Volunteer tutors provide direction to the youth
in the areas of reading, writing, mathmatics, science and computer
applications. Our program also encourages parental involvement
through presentations and combined classes.
In 1997 as
Dr. Grissom observed the great success of the academic tutoring
program, he selected a team of five professionals from within
to serve as an organizing committee. The five were directed to
research and develop an autonomous non-profit corporation with
a mission statement that reads as such: "To promote the spiritual,
social, and educational enrichment of children, and young adults
within the Detroit Metropolitian Community"
.In the spring
of 1998 the said mentioned team began holding formal meetings,
(monthly) elected officers, adopted by-laws and developed articles
of incorporation. The name H.M.Grissom Enrichment and Development
Corporation was selected to best encompass our activites.

A Sponsorship and Enrichment Program
Enrichment activites are those activities that directly or indirectly
assist in improving the social, psychological, and mental awareness
of our community's youth. It also includes activites that expose
our youth to the humanities, arts and sciences. It is anticipated
that this program will comprise approximately 30 of the activities
conducted and utilize approximately 30 of available resources.
As research indicates, exposure to a variety of educational and
informative stimuli, serves to enhance the development of academic
and social skills in children. Such exposure is often limited
in our community by a lack of resources.
Our sponsorship
and enrichment program seeks to sponsor various field trips and
events. Visits to such places as zoos, museums, college campuses,
various exhibits, and workshops are all a part of our vision.
The program will also host workshops and presentations directed
towards improving, and empowering the academic, and social awareness
of our community's youth. And finally A Scholarship Program. Today's students
need more out-of- family assistance to bear the burden of a higher
education cost without incurring excessive debt at an early age.
As it is the mission of the HMGEDC to academically promote, enrich
and develop our community's youth, we also aspire to be a resource
in supporting our community's postsecondary education cost. We
will provide financial assistance to students who demonstrate
a commitment to extend his or her academic program toward achieving
a career via a college or university.
The Mickey Green Scholarship

Mickey Green: Detroit, Mi.(1942-2001) A Musician, Artist/Painter, Counselor, Instructor of Black History, and Nutrition.
Mickey was an accessible philanthropist, and polymath, mentoring countless numbers of souls young and old, with style and grace. He was elegant, stately and smooth, always leaving those whom he encountered with a renewed hope and a confidence in achievement. Many benefited from his deep well of knowledge. Mickey tenaciously sought wisdom from his youth and with it came an extraordinary ability to communicate on all levels. His circle of friends included artesian, kings, queens, mayors, senators, and many souls considered materially less fortunate. Upon Mickey’s transition a host of friends, acquaintances, well wishers, and mourners came together and provided the initial thrust in forming a mechanism to keep Mickey’s spirit in our hearts.
The Mickey Green Scholarship was established the year following his departure in March 2002. Today the HMG has awarded four Mickey Green Scholars, and assisted several students in international travel, college fees and books.
Scholarship
awards will take place annually, the second Saturday in August,
with an accompanying ceremonial gathering of members of the recipient's
family, friends and local church.
